When providing counseling to a LGBTQI+ client, counselors must understand their ethical obligations, as well as attend to the multiple sets of counseling competencies. Using a multicultural and social justice counseling framework, counselors can situate their learning into very specific areas for LGBTQI+ clients: self-awareness of attitudes and beliefs, knowledge of issues faced by LGBTQI+ people, counseling skills, and action. Understanding common terminology, the history of the LGBTQI+ population, and modern issues faced by these communities can help lay the foundation for counselors working with LGBTQI+ persons. © 2017 by the American Counseling Association. Authors review the current state of Evidence Based Practice (EBP) for counseling LGBTQI+ clients. Although there is an identified need for more research in this area, the research supports a general affirmative approach. Strategies for building rapport, assessment, and interventions are reviewed. Specific attention is given to the importance of cultural accommodations and adaptations of EBPs that have not been tested directly on the LGBTQI+ population. Authors also explore how integrative and creative therapies may hold helpful strategies for work with these communities. © 2017 by the American Counseling Association. All rights reserved.

LGBTQI+ youth face an identity struggle that is dissimilar to their heterosexual and/or cisgender peers. While family and community acceptance impacts the process of understanding one's own affectional orientation and/or gender identity, all LGBTQI+ persons typically engage in a process of understanding and eventually accepting their affectional and/or gender variance. The authors review LGBTQI+ Identity Formation Models, as well as the influence of intersectionality on identity. The benefits and challenges of coming out are explored, as counselors need to understand this delicate process and how to support clients who are considering coming out. Counselor work with families is also reviewed. © 2017 by the American Counseling Association. All rights reserved.

The author agrees with James Moor that computer technology, because it is 'logically malleable', is bringing about a genuine social revolution. Moor compares the computer reVolution to the 'industrial revolution' of the late 18th and the 19th centuries; but it is argued here that a better comparison is with the 'printing press revolution' that occurred two centuries before that. Just as the major ethical theories of Bentham and Kant were developed in response to the printing press revolution, so a new ethical theory is likely to emerge from computer ethics in response to the computer revolution. The newly emerging field of information ethics, therefore, is much more important than even its founders and advocates believe. © John Weckert 2007. All rights reserved.

The issues surrounding working with clients who are predisposed to share affection with people from more than one gender. Terminology, as well as prevalence are discussed. Bisexual identity development and relationships are explored. Experiences of bias, including bisexual erasure, biphobia, and bisexual invisibility are discussed. Bisexuals may encounter monosexism and marginalization in both heterosexual and queer communities, among people who do not identify with non-binary identities. Intersectional identities can be subject to increased oppression. Authors explore how minority stress contributes to greater physical and mental health issues in bisexual clients. Although there has been little research on affirmative counseling techniques for bisexual clients, a general strength-based approach with feminist and social justice techniques is recommended. © 2017 by the American Counseling Association. OBJECTIVE To characterize and compare injuries found in dogs involved in spontaneously occurring dogfights with those of dogs used in illegal organized dogfighting. DESIGN Retrospective case-control study. ANIMALS 36 medium-sized dogs evaluated following spontaneous fights with a dog of the same sex and similar weight (medium dog–medium dog [MDMD] fights), 160 small dogs examined following spontaneous fights with a larger dog (big dog–little dog [BDLD] fights), and 62 dogs evaluated after being seized in connection with dogfighting law enforcement raids. PROCEDURES Demographic characteristics and injuries were recorded from medical records. Prevalence of soft tissue injuries in predetermined body surface zones, as well as dental or skeletal injuries, was determined for dogs grouped by involvement in BDLD, MDMD, and organized dogfights. The extent of injuries in each location was scored and compared among groups by 1-factor ANOVA. Patterns of injuries commonly incurred by each group were determined by use of prevalence data. RESULTS Mean extent of injury scores differed significantly among groups for all body surface zones except the eye and periorbital region. Mean scores for dental injuries and rib fractures also differed significantly among groups. Organized fighting dogs more commonly had multiple injuries, particularly of the thoracic limbs, dorsal and lateral aspects of the head and muzzle or oral mucosa, dorsal and lateral aspects of the neck, and ventral neck and thoracic region. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE To the authors’ knowledge, this was the first study to compare injuries incurred during spontaneous and organized dogfighting. Establishing evidence-based patterns of injury will help clinicians identify dogs injured by organized dogfighting and aid in the prosecution of this crime. © 2017, American Veterinary Medical Association. Early vision care is critical for all children. If undetected, eye disorders such as amblyopia and strabismus may result in permanent vision loss. Vision exams should include a careful history and physical including fix and follow, red reflex, and cover/uncover testing. Photo screening and visual acuity exams should be administered whenever possible. © 2017 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. All rights reserved.

In the current U.S. military operational environment, it has been estimated that up to 700,000 troop years (cumulative years of service including multiple tours of duty) have been logged over the past decade since offensive campaigns began, following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks (Smith, Benight, & Cieslak, 2013). With this influx of eligible beneficiaries, the utilization of Veterans Administration (VA) education benefits more than doubled between 2001 and 2012 (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2013). This study examined the relationship between peer emotional support and perceived self-efficacy and their implications for, or relationship to, mental health morbidities in a postsecondary educational setting. The study included 39 matriculated student-veterans at an accredited postsecondary institution in New England. Participants answered 32 questions related to three constructs: perceived self-efficacy, peer emotional support, and mental health morbidity. It was found that a moderate, but significant, positive correlation exists between perceived self-efficacy and peer emotional support in student-veterans. A moderate but significant negative correlation was uncovered between perceived self-efficacy and mental health morbidity. In addition, this study found that first-year students report significantly lower peer emotional support than seniors and graduate students. It was also found that those veterans with only one deployment reported significantly greater self-efficacy than those who had deployed twice. This study serves as a conduit into future research on the multifaceted issues facing student-veterans. Copyright © 2017, Association for Continuing Higher Education.

Due to their stigmatizing and marginalized experiences, as adults, LGBTQI+ people have variant developmental experiences for identity and intimacy. Their collegiate and occupational experiences may also be impacted by these negative experiences surrounding their LGBTQI+ identity. Experiences within the military are also covered within this chapter. The authors also discuss mid-life experiences for those within the LGBTQI+ population, including relationships, marriage, family planning and raising children. Issues facing the LGBTQI+ elderly population are also covered. © 2017 by the American Counseling Association. All rights reserved.

As a means of redirecting my own personal grief that stemmed from Hillary Rodham Clinton's loss to Donald J. Trump in the most recent presidential election, I penned the following prose during the early morning hours of November 9, 2016 as Trump gave his victory speech. Like many Americans who voted in the 2016 Presidential Election, I support the right to vote for one's choice of presidential candidate; however, I am not alone in my concerns about the current presidential administration. Not only are Trump's attempts to silence the media and the right to freedom of speech cause for alarm, but his ideas on healthcare, human rights and international political relationships arguably contribute to apprehension and unease for any number of people. No presidency is without its issues, but the verse penned here may speak to others as the Trump presidency continues to unfold. © 2017 Journal of International Women's Studies.

The purpose of this phenomenological research was to discover whether training in the Korean martial art of Taekwondo may benefit undergraduate (UG) students in handling stress. The goal of this innovative approach to learning and stress management was to allow UG students from across disciplines at a metropolitan university achieve an increased sense of emotional balance, inner peace, and overall well-being in body, mind, and spirit. No such study has been conducted before now. This research was multidisciplinary in its inclusion of insights from the tenets of higher education, human development and psychology, nursing and sociology, as well as the art, philosophy, and sport of Taekwondo. Ten UG student participants were sought for this research study, though a total of eight students agreed to participate. The study was open to all of the UG students at this university. Phenomenology was used to identify themes that emerged regarding student participant’s experience with stress. Consequently, new ideas were established about the ways in which UG students learned to use Taekwondo training to overcome stress, thereby improving upon and maintaining health and well-being in body, mind, and spirit. © 2017 by the author; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

Prevention of sports injuries is a priority for sport stakeholders across the spectrum of training and competition. Achieving this objective requires a multidisciplinary approach with strength and conditioning coaches playing an important role in the process. When considering sports injury prevention strategies, the role of the strength and conditioning coach can extend beyond observing exercise technique and prescribing training to develop a robust and resilient athlete. This paper provides strength and conditioning coaches with a broad overview of the sports injury prevention process and outlines examples of how strength and conditioning coaches can work to promote and improve athlete safety. © 2017 National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Speckle imaging is a well known method to achieve diffraction-limited (DL) imaging from ground-based telescopes. The traditional observing method for speckle has been to observe a single, unresolved, source per telescope pointing over a relatively small field of view (FOV). The need for large DL surveys of targets with high sky density motivates a desire for simultaneous speckle imaging over large FOVs, however it is currently impractical to attain this by covering the entire focal plane with fast readout detectors. An alternative approach is to connect a relatively small number of detector pixels to multiple interesting targets spanning a large FOV through the use of optical fibers, a technique employed in spectroscopy for decades. However, for imaging we require the use of coherent fiber bundles (CFBs). We discuss various design considerations for coherent fiber speckle imaging with an eye toward a multiplexed system using numerous configurable CFBs, and we test its viability with a prototype instrument that uses a single CFB to transport speckle images from the telescope focal plane to a traditionally designed, fast readout speckle camera. Using this device on University of Virginia's Fan Mountain Observatory 40-inch telescope we have for the first time successfully demonstrated speckle imaging through a CFB, using both optical and NIR detectors. Results are presented of DL speckle imaging of well-known close (including subarcsecond) binary stars resolved with this fiber-fed speckle system and compared to both literature results and traditional speckle imaging taken with the same camera directly, with no intervening CFB. © 2018 SPIE.

This title was first published in 2003. In this study, the author examines the behavior of one group of court-appointed defence attorneys and reaches the conclusion that although, in contrast to popular opinion, these attorneys maintain an adversarial stance against the prosecutors and behave in a legally ethical (or "procedurally just") manner, case outcomes are unduly shaped by social class and are therefore substantively unjust. This occurs because poor defendants typically lack cultural rhetoric that favourably influences those who construct and operate the criminal court system. Ironically, this indicates that, in many cases, the process of plea bargaining may be more substantively just than trials. A major contribution of the study is the detailed analysis of the manner by which oppression and substantive injustice occur in the adjudication of many cases and how the cultural practices of the powerful can frequently misconstrue, exclude and mute the voices of the poor. © Debra S. Emmelman 2003.
