Research has consistently shown that most women under the control of the criminal justice system are mothers. The robustness of this finding has been accompanied by a failure to consider the characteristics and needs of women without children. In this study, we examine data on 1,334 formerly incarcerated women. Findings indicate that while mothers and non-mothers share some characteristics, they differ on several others, most notably demographic profile, mental health, and timing of contacts with the criminal justice system. These results suggest a need to recognize the diversity among women offender groups, particularly when developing policies and programs need.

This chapter describes a two-step process including videotaping and process-recording activities to facilitate self-awareness and the expression of empathy and acceptance toward other points of view. These activities are designed for beginning student clinicians who are currently completing their coursework and their first clinical internship. The first step of videotaping helps clinicians become more aware of their inner thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and personal values. This first step also helps participating clinicians become more aware of their nonverbal communication with clients, helping them assess how their internal experiences of empathy and acceptance match what is being conveyed nonverbally to their clients. The second step of the activity, process recording, helps clinicians reflect on their ability to use self-awareness to analyze their inner experiences and their outer expressions of empathy and acceptance (both verbal and nonverbal) while still being attuned to their clients' communication.

Allport’s (1954) intergroup contact hypothesis states that interactions with members of an out-group, particularly of a different racial and/or ethnic group, are effective in changing attitudes about diversity (Allport, 1954; Pettigrew, 1998). In this study, the intergroup contact hypothesis was applied to the design of a sport management course. The classroom component focused the role of sport in education, health, and leadership development, and the application was structured sport and physical activity programming with school-age children at several urban sites. Data were gathered from 91 college students over 3 years about course-related experiences and how the students’ backgrounds influenced their social identities and understanding of out-group members. Results showed that intergroup contact effectively assisted in developing understanding and cooperation and reducing negative attitudes between groups. The participants received diversity education, via intergroup contact, both inside and outside the classroom, which will potentially equip them to take proactive strategies when managing organizational diversity in the sport industry.

We explore different contexts and mechanisms that might promote or alleviate the gender effect in risk aversion. Our main result is that we do not find gender differences in risk aversion when the choice is framed as a willingness-to-accept (WTA) task. When the choice is framed as a willingness-to-pay (WTP) task, men are willing to pay more and thus exhibit lower risk aversion. However, when the choice is framed as a willingness to accept task, women will not accept less than men. These findings imply gender differences in the endowment effect. We also find that the effect size of the gender difference in risk aversion is reduced or eliminated as the context changes from tasks framed as gambles to other domains; and that attitudes toward gambling mediate the gender effect in gambling framed tasks.

The sabbatical leave was spent on research on Hibbert coefficients of ideals and integral closures of ideals, resulting in submission for publication, as co-author, of articles, Specialization and integral closure, to the Journal of the London Mathematical Society, and Hilbert polynomials of j-transforms, to the Mathematical Proceedings of the Cambridge Philosophical Society. Two research visits, to Purdue University and to Maiji University in Japan, facilitated work on these publications and laid foundation for new projects, already in progress, on normality of ideals and reduction numbers of ideals.

Cardone wrote chapters of a book manuscript and submitted two related articles to peer reviewed journals. She also transcribed and edited a scholarly interview, presented portions of book project at conference and traveled to site of book topic for on-ground research. Accomplishments are different than outlined in original proposal. The report describes project issues and results.

Starting with the eighteenth century but focusing on primarily the nineteenth century through the present day, these essays two sets of differences: the multifarious modes of representations that have materialized from the publication of Gulliver's Travels to The Hunger Games, and the range of animal lives, and human-animal relationships, that have emerged over this time. Hochman met his goal to develop, research and write a new study on J.D. Salinger. The manuscript "Harvesting Salinger's Rye" was completed and has been submitted to various publishers. He also engaged in non-Salinger scholarship delivering conference papers on creative writing. Hochman also used the sabbatical time to make improvements in his teaching and course content and to engage in professional reading.
