The complexity of the human body is such that any disturbances to its homeostatic state, unreversed, can lead to the development of illness or disease. When one considers the terminology of incivility as a concept, one does not automatically equate this concept with disease or illness. However, incivility left to persist in work environments can prove mentally and physically damaging to the victim. Mindfulness can be used as a means to help nurses experiencing workplace incivility, to begin the process of emotional and physical healing.

Urban forests can serve as valuable oases for birds and other wildlife in densely-populated urban and suburban areas with proper management. This study analyzes forest health and habitat availability of a publically-owned urban forest in West Haven, Connecticut. During the first half of the twentieth-century, this urban forest was privately-owned and primarily managed as an orchard and meadow for grazing horses. By the mid-twentieth-century, farming dwindled on the land and vegetation overtook the property. Today, this closed-canopy forest, with access to both freshwater streams and marshlands, provides habitat to a variety of native and invasive plant and animal species. By identifying the forest species and characteristics of the six hectare Cove River Historic Site (CRHS) urban forest, this study serves as the first forest inventory and provides a baseline dataset to help manage an ecologically important urban forest. Additionally, we identified bird habitat opportunities and bird species at the property. This study considers both the historic land management practices of this site in tandem with present-day forest health and animal activity to understand how this fragmented forest contributes to local biodiversity. The results indicate that this property, located within the urban environment of the central Connecticut coastline, offers varied habitats and food sources for many resident and migratory bird species, as well as wildlife including foxes.

Bullying in the workplace is considered a growing epidemic and organizations are struggling to ensure appropriate responses and protocol as there is currently no individual statutory remedy. This paper provides a synthesis of current research regarding workplace bullying, legal policies, efforts to promote remedial legislation and organizational responsibility and outcomes. Workplace bullying is addressed from several perspectives including organizational consequences, characteristics of both victims and perpetrators, the current state of legislation and best practices for organizational policy. The paper also provides a discussion of developing issues related to increased technology and social media usage.

Peers are an important adjunct to the public mental health service system, and are being increasingly utilized across the country as a cost-effective solution to workforce shortages. Despite the tremendous growth of peer-delivered support over the past two decades, it has only been within the past few years that peer programs have been the subject of empirical inquiry. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence and characteristics of peer-delivered parenting programs across the New York State public mental health service system. We surveyed 46 family peer organizations across New York State regarding their delivery of structured peer-delivered parenting programs. Thirty-four (76%) completed the questionnaire, and of them, 18 (53%) delivered a parenting program. Subsequent interviews with seven of the 18 organizations revealed peer organizations had been delivering eight unique parenting programs for upwards of two decades. Additionally, organizations offered multiple supports to families to participate. Training, supervision, and issues around fidelity are discussed, as well as the implications of this study for states utilizing a peer workforce.

Studies of the institutional development of the presidency and popular leadership by presidents over time lead us to contrary expectations as to how a nineteenth-century president would react to a major political scandal. Scholarship on newspapers of the late 1800s is also unclear on how a quasipartisan media, with some outlets moving toward independence, would cover a White House scandal. I find that a close analysis of the case of President Ulysses S. Grant and the Whiskey Ring scandal forces us to reconsider what we assume to be firmly modern developments in both presidential studies and media history. Though a supposedly “premodern” president, Grant still mounted a concerted effort to mitigate the damage of the scandal. Further, although the president could get his version of events across in prominent newspapers, Republican newspaper coverage was hardly reliable. Newspapers also connected politicians’ character and psychology to mistakes made in office and made presidential strategies to shape public perception clear to their audiences—emphases on political gamesmanship considered hallmarks of the modern media environment.

The traditional architecture of serial fusion based multi-biometric verification systems places an average performing or the worst performing individual verifier in the final stage. Because the final stage gives the verification decision using a single threshold and takes on the most confusing samples which are rejected by all previous stages, an average or the worst performing individual verifier may incur high verification errors in the final stage, which may negatively impact the performance of the whole system. Unfortunately, it is not possible to place a strong individual verifier in the final stage of a traditional architecture because if we place a strong individual verifier in the final stage, we will have to place a weak individual verifier in an earlier stage. Studies show that placing a weak individual verifier in an earlier stage worsens the performance of the whole system by giving more wrong decision earlier. Hence, the challenge is-how can we place the best performing individual verifier in the first stage and at the same time not place an average or the worst performing individual verifier in the final stage? In this paper, we address this challenge. We have come up with a very simple but effective solution. We have proposed a modification to the traditional architecture of serial fusion based multi-biometric verification systems. With rigorous experiments on the NIST multi-modal dataset and using three serial fusion based multi-biometric verification schemes, we demonstrated that our proposed architecture significantly improves the performance of serial fusion based multi-biometric verification systems. © 2018 IEEE.

Visual information on a talker's face can influence what a listener hears. Commonly used approaches to study this include mismatched audiovisual stimuli (e.g., McGurk type stimuli) or visual speech in auditory noise. In this paper we discuss potential limitations of these approaches and introduce a novel visual phonemic restoration method. This method always presents the same visual stimulus (e.g., /ba/) dubbed with a matched auditory stimulus (/ba/) or one that has weakened consonantal information and sounds more /a/-like). When this reduced auditory stimulus (or /a/) is dubbed with the visual /ba/, a visual influence will result in effectively 'restoring' the weakened auditory cues so that the stimulus is perceived as a /ba/. An oddball design in which participants are asked to detect the /a/ among a stream of more frequently occurring /ba/s while either a speaking face or face with no visual speech was used. In addition, the same paradigm was presented for a second contrast in which participants detected /pa/ among /ba/s, a contrast which should be unaltered by the presence of visual speech. Behavioral and some ERP findings reflect the expected phonemic restoration for the /ba/ vs. /a/ contrast; specifically, we observed reduced accuracy and P300 response in the presence of visual speech. Further, we report an unexpected finding of reduced accuracy and P300 response for both speech contrasts in the presence of visual speech, suggesting overall modulation of the auditory signal in the presence of visual speech. Consistent with this, we observed a mismatch negativity (MMN) effect for the /ba/ vs. /pa/ contrast only that was larger in absence of visual speech. We discuss the potential utility for this paradigm for listeners who cannot respond actively, such as infants and individuals with developmental disabilities.

Context.-Distinguishing chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (chRCC), especially in the presence of eosinophilic cytoplasm, from oncocytoma on hematoxylin-eosin can be difficult and often requires time-consuming ancillary procedures that ultimately may not be informative. Objective.-To explore the potential of multiphoton microscopy (MPM) as an alternative and rapid diagnostic tool in differentiating oncocytoma from chRCC at subcellular resolution without tissue processing. Design.-Unstained, deparaffinized tissue sections from 27 tumors (oncocytoma [n = 12], chRCC [n = 12], eosinophilic variant of chRCC [n = 1], and atypical oncocytic renal neoplasm [n = 2]) were imaged with MPM. Morphologic evaluation and automated quantitative morphometric analysis were conducted to distinguish between chRCC and oncocytoma. Results.-The typical cases of oncocytomas (12 of 12) and chRCC (12 of 12) could be readily differentiated on MPM based on the morphologic features similar to hematoxylin-eosin. The most striking MPM signature of both of the tumors was the presence of autofluorescent intracytoplasmic granules, which are not seen on hematoxylin-eosin-stained slides. Although we saw these granules in both types of tumors, they appeared distinct, based on their size, shape, cytoplasmic distribution, and autofluorescence wavelengths, and were valuable in arriving at a definitive diagnosis. For oncocytomas and chRCC, high diagnostic accuracies of 100% and 83.3% were achieved on blinded MPM and morphometric analysis, respectively. Conclusions.-To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of MPM to distinguish chRCC from oncocytoma in fixed tissues. Our study was limited by small sample size and only a few variants of oncocytic tumors. Prospective studies are warranted to assess the utility of MPM as a diagnostic aid in oncocytic renal tumors. © Copyright 2018 College of American Pathologists.

This study confronts the questionable reliability and accuracy of field test kits distributed globally to determine arsenic in drinking water. Because kits are the primary method of arsenic analysis in the areas most affected, an alternate, nontoxic formulation is needed to provide accurate results. Hypothesizing that introducing silver nitrate as the reagent in test kits could successfully substitute for restricted mercuric bromide, the study found that the reformulated kits provided reliable, precise, and accurate results over a broader range of contamination. Digital image analysis was used to examine the blue color value produced when arsine reacts with silver nitrate impregnated test strips. An optimal concentration of AgNO3 exhibiting the greatest linearity was determined by graphical comparison and the color intensity of the strips observed to be inversely proportional to the concentration of As (III). Adapted field test kits were then constructed to examine water samples ranging in arsenic contamination from 0 to 50 μg L−1. A series of reactions was completed to demonstrate reproducibility and test for the accuracy of the procedure. Statistical examination of colorimetrically quantified results confirmed the hypothesis that silver nitrate can reliably and precisely expand the kit’s range of detection while maintaining its low cost, quick assessment, and uncomplicated technique. This new method, using 0.4% m/v AgNO3 as a reagent for the Gutzeit reaction, was able to distinguish between concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 15, and 50 μg L−1 at the 95% confidence level. © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.

VRR spectroscopy was used for BCC and normal skin tissues with 532nm excitation. The spectra showed significant changes in collagen, carotenoids and lipids. These enhanced fingerprints demonstrate a potential use as label-free pathology method. © 2018 The Author(s).
