We report the first measurements of transverse single-spin asymmetries for inclusive jet and jet+π± production at midrapidity from transversely polarized proton-proton collisions at √s=500 GeV. The data were collected in 2011 with the STAR detector sampled from 23 pb−1 integrated luminosity with an average beam polarization of 53%. Asymmetries are reported for jets with transverse momenta 6<pT<55 GeV/c and pseudorapidity |η|<1. Presented are measurements of the inclusive-jet azimuthal transverse single-spin asymmetry, sensitive to twist-3 initial-state quark-gluon correlators; the Collins asymmetry, sensitive to quark transversity coupled to the polarized Collins fragmentation function; and the first measurement of the “Collins-like” asymmetry, sensitive to linearly polarized gluons. Within the present statistical precision, inclusive-jet and Collins-like asymmetries are small, with the latter allowing the first experimental constraints on gluon linear polarization in a polarized proton. At higher values of jet transverse momenta, we observe the first nonzero Collins asymmetries in polarized-proton collisions, with a statistical significance of greater than 5σ. The results span a range of x similar to results from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering but at much higher Q2. The Collins results enable tests of universality and factorization breaking in the transverse momentum-dependent formulation of perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

There can be no doubt that mobile technologies are here to stay. Global mobile traffic grew 74 percent in 2015 alone, with 563 million devices and connections added -- most of them tablets and Smartphones. This growth has been 4000-fold in the past 10 years and 400 million-fold in the past 15 years (Cisco, 2016). Mobile technologies permeate the lives of 21st century citizens as mainstays of organizational and institutional day-to-day operations, commerce, and communication and as tools used to support individuals' personal, social, and career responsibilities. In both the corporate and educational worlds, e- and m-learning and marketing with mobile technologies are moving forward at breakneck speed with, in many cases, a blurring of traditional sector boundaries. As neither the technology nor the uses are static, exploring practices and policies that underpin this quickly shifting mobile technology context is crucial for ensuring its intelligent, purposeful, and equitable use. Workplace incivility remains a problem within the nursing profession. As nurse leaders, we must recognize and not ignore the complexity of cultures that have adapted incivility into the work environment. Nursing education is a discipline that requires collaborative team work, independent drive, and commitment. New nursing faculty experiencing incivility can use mindfulness-based meditation approaches to cope with uncivil behaviors experienced within the workplace. Nurse educators applying the concepts of mindfulness can learn how to provide themselves self-care by reducing stress, as enhanced daily awareness of peace and calm are incorporated into their lifestyle. Mindfulness provides a realization that control can only be given to other persons when an individual allows or accepts another's negative behaviors. Awareness of the value and importance of oneself can assist the nurse educator experiencing incivility to maintain his or her emotional, physical, and spiritual health despite the volatility of the work environment.

In this research we demonstrate how various facets of communication influence customer loyalty in a B2B selling environment. Palmatier, Scheer, and Steenkamp (2007) show that salesperson owned loyalty (customers' loyalty specific to the salesperson) can be differentiated from customers' overall loyalty to the firm. We demonstrate how various facets of communication differentially influence salesperson owned loyalty and loyalty to the firm. We find that greater bidirectional flow of communication enhances both salesperson owned loyalty and customers' loyalty to firm. However, greater frequency of communication enhances only salesperson owned loyalty. Formality in communication negatively influences salesperson owned loyalty and positively influence customers' loyalty to firm. In addition, we find an interesting moderation effect of these relationships by customers' self-construal. Theoretical and practical implications of our findings are discussed.

Background: According to the Healthy People 2020 goals, the sustainability of breastfeeding duration rates within the United States has not been achieved. To increase these rates, it is important that women with breastfeeding difficulties receive the support needed to continue breastfeeding. When supplementation occurs, it is essential that the breastfeeding relationship be preserved. Various methods of supplementation are often recommended including use of the supplemental feeding tube device (SFTD). Purpose: The question guiding this brief is “What evidence exists to support the use of an SFTD as a method of supplementation for breastfed infants?” Search Strategy: The PubMed and CINAHL databases were queried for original research published in English from 1990 through July 2016. Search terms included “supplemental feeding tube,” “breastfeeding,” “term infants,” “premature infants,” “Supplemental Nursing System,” “Lact-aid,” and “supply line.” Findings: Very limited research exists on the use of SFTDs as a method of supplementation for breastfed infants; however, existing research suggests that an SFTD may be useful as a supplementation method for breastfed infants. High-quality research is needed to evaluate the efficacy of using an SFTD for supporting exclusive and all breastfeeding rates. Implications for Practice: Nurses and providers need to be educated and trained in the use of SFTDs as well as all supplemental feeding methods. Information on efficacy and SFTD use should also be included in policies related to breastfeeding and human milk use. Implications for Research: Further research should determine best methods of supplementation for breastfed infants and should examine differences in breastfeeding rates when using the SFTD for supplementation.

We have measured the absolute proper motion of the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy using Subaru Suprime-Cam images taken at three epochs, with a time baseline of ~10 yr. We astrometrically calibrate each epoch by constructing distortion-correction 'maps' from the best available Subaru Suprime-Cam dithered data sets and from Gaia Data Release 1 positions. The magnitude limit of the proper motion study is V ~ 24. The area covered is 26.7 × 23.3 arcmin2, which is still within the core radius of Sextans. The derived proper motion is (μα, μδ) = (-0.409 ± 0.050, -0.047 ± 0.058) mas yr-1. The direction of motion is perpendicular to the major axis of the galaxy. Our measurement, combined with radial velocity and distance from the literature, implies a low eccentricity orbit, with a moderate inclination to the Galactic plane, and a period of 3 Gyr. Sextans is now some 0.4 Gyr away from its pericentre (rperi ~ 75 kpc), moving towards its apocentre (rapo ~ 132 kpc). Its orbit is inconsistent with membership to the vast polar structure of Galactic satellites. © 2018 The Author(s).

Edith Richman Stolzenberg (1913–2004) was the first woman to be hired as a social worker in Hartford Public High School in Hartford, Connecticut. In a career that spanned 60 years and much of 20th-century social welfare history, she was motivated by the social justice tradition of her Jewish upbringing and the religious value of hospitality to advocate for children and families. The complexity of the human body is such that any disturbances to its homeostatic state, unreversed, can lead to the development of illness or disease. When one considers the terminology of incivility as a concept, one does not automatically equate this concept with disease or illness. However, incivility left to persist in work environments can prove mentally and physically damaging to the victim. Mindfulness can be used as a means to help nurses experiencing workplace incivility, to begin the process of emotional and physical healing.

Urban forests can serve as valuable oases for birds and other wildlife in densely-populated urban and suburban areas with proper management. This study analyzes forest health and habitat availability of a publically-owned urban forest in West Haven, Connecticut. During the first half of the twentieth-century, this urban forest was privately-owned and primarily managed as an orchard and meadow for grazing horses. By the mid-twentieth-century, farming dwindled on the land and vegetation overtook the property. Today, this closed-canopy forest, with access to both freshwater streams and marshlands, provides habitat to a variety of native and invasive plant and animal species. By identifying the forest species and characteristics of the six hectare Cove River Historic Site (CRHS) urban forest, this study serves as the first forest inventory and provides a baseline dataset to help manage an ecologically important urban forest. Additionally, we identified bird habitat opportunities and bird species at the property. This study considers both the historic land management practices of this site in tandem with present-day forest health and animal activity to understand how this fragmented forest contributes to local biodiversity. The results indicate that this property, located within the urban environment of the central Connecticut coastline, offers varied habitats and food sources for many resident and migratory bird species, as well as wildlife including foxes.

Bullying in the workplace is considered a growing epidemic and organizations are struggling to ensure appropriate responses and protocol as there is currently no individual statutory remedy. This paper provides a synthesis of current research regarding workplace bullying, legal policies, efforts to promote remedial legislation and organizational responsibility and outcomes. Workplace bullying is addressed from several perspectives including organizational consequences, characteristics of both victims and perpetrators, the current state of legislation and best practices for organizational policy. The paper also provides a discussion of developing issues related to increased technology and social media usage.

Peers are an important adjunct to the public mental health service system, and are being increasingly utilized across the country as a cost-effective solution to workforce shortages. Despite the tremendous growth of peer-delivered support over the past two decades, it has only been within the past few years that peer programs have been the subject of empirical inquiry. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence and characteristics of peer-delivered parenting programs across the New York State public mental health service system. We surveyed 46 family peer organizations across New York State regarding their delivery of structured peer-delivered parenting programs. Thirty-four (76%) completed the questionnaire, and of them, 18 (53%) delivered a parenting program. Subsequent interviews with seven of the 18 organizations revealed peer organizations had been delivering eight unique parenting programs for upwards of two decades. Additionally, organizations offered multiple supports to families to participate. Training, supervision, and issues around fidelity are discussed, as well as the implications of this study for states utilizing a peer workforce.

Studies of the institutional development of the presidency and popular leadership by presidents over time lead us to contrary expectations as to how a nineteenth-century president would react to a major political scandal. Scholarship on newspapers of the late 1800s is also unclear on how a quasipartisan media, with some outlets moving toward independence, would cover a White House scandal. I find that a close analysis of the case of President Ulysses S. Grant and the Whiskey Ring scandal forces us to reconsider what we assume to be firmly modern developments in both presidential studies and media history. Though a supposedly “premodern” president, Grant still mounted a concerted effort to mitigate the damage of the scandal. Further, although the president could get his version of events across in prominent newspapers, Republican newspaper coverage was hardly reliable. Newspapers also connected politicians’ character and psychology to mistakes made in office and made presidential strategies to shape public perception clear to their audiences—emphases on political gamesmanship considered hallmarks of the modern media environment.

The traditional architecture of serial fusion based multi-biometric verification systems places an average performing or the worst performing individual verifier in the final stage. Because the final stage gives the verification decision using a single threshold and takes on the most confusing samples which are rejected by all previous stages, an average or the worst performing individual verifier may incur high verification errors in the final stage, which may negatively impact the performance of the whole system. Unfortunately, it is not possible to place a strong individual verifier in the final stage of a traditional architecture because if we place a strong individual verifier in the final stage, we will have to place a weak individual verifier in an earlier stage. Studies show that placing a weak individual verifier in an earlier stage worsens the performance of the whole system by giving more wrong decision earlier. Hence, the challenge is-how can we place the best performing individual verifier in the first stage and at the same time not place an average or the worst performing individual verifier in the final stage? In this paper, we address this challenge. We have come up with a very simple but effective solution. We have proposed a modification to the traditional architecture of serial fusion based multi-biometric verification systems. With rigorous experiments on the NIST multi-modal dataset and using three serial fusion based multi-biometric verification schemes, we demonstrated that our proposed architecture significantly improves the performance of serial fusion based multi-biometric verification systems. © 2018 IEEE.
