Nursing home administrators are caught in a "perfect storm" of rapidly increasing health care costs, decreasing reimbursement, and increasing competition. This paper documents how these pressures create cascading misalignments resulting in compromises of the quality of comfort care. These problems are inevitable, given the increase in unfunded mandates, where performance evaluation is decoupled from actual performance. Ambient technologies are explored as a means of tracking actual care versus reported care. Independent quality of care tracking and documentation of ambient data, coupled with best practice research and rewards, are explored to promote quality care as a marketing advantage. Implications are discussed.

Manufacturing is playing a significant role in its re-shoring into America. Companies are grappling with ways to obtain that competitive advantage by distinguishing themselves through their intellectual capabilities, process improvements, technology, people, shop floor management and information flows. The purpose of this paper is to describe the effort at Farmingdale State College to educate our students in understanding Production Management and Master Production Schedule (MPS). We are trying to prepare students for entry into the workforce. By using a Real world ERP tool in the classroom while complimenting this learning with touring local manufacturers who use this tool and having production control experts in our classrooms. [1] The opportunity presents itself for these students to visit real world manufacturers using the same tool these students use in the classroom, the Infor Visual ERP. Each semester students go to a local manufacturer to see how the product is made and the ERP system is used to make it. Each semester a subject matter expert, SME, in manufacturing comes into the class and talks about how they use their ERP to perform their functional responsibilities. Students go into these companies and sit down with these Production Manufacturing and IT SME’s to see how they use the modules in their ERP system from estimating, Production Management, MPS to delivery and payment. From the manufacturing window to the Master Schedule Window students learn from these companies SME’s just how they perform their functions, how they use this tool. Then that is replicated this in the classroom lab assignments for students to better understand Production Management, scheduling and work order integrity. They identify the desired schedule (forecast) and populate a Master Production Schedule. They create a BOM with work orders adding operations and material. The Production Management/Control is the function of directing or regulating the movement of goods through the entire manufacturing cycle from the requisitioning of raw material to the delivery of finished products. (APICS Dictionary 13th Edition) The Master Production Schedule is often a major component of Sales and Operations Management. The purpose of the Master Schedule is to translate the Sales forecast into a Production Plan that must be executed by the organization. The Master Schedule is the demand side of the equation and must represent the customers’ needs. In this way the Master Scheduler can give manufacturing its best chance for success. Master Production Schedule (MPS): The MPS should be closely aligned with the Sales Forecast. Students enter a Sales Forecast into the system similar to what they have seen at the companies. Students see how it is the liaison between the Sales Forecast and a production work order. Its function is to translate the Sales Forecast into a viable production schedule that supports the customer requirements, while taking into account shop floor constraints. The MPS must support the Sales Forecast and customer demand. Students learn the importance of this in their lab assignments. They identify and enter shop floor resources. Students learn that companies should never chase supply they should chase demand and manage supply. Supply can mean, purchased parts, and externally produced parts, internally made items, internal machine or labor constraints. The student’s comprehension of this topic, concept and knowledge is significantly enhanced due to the tours to local manufacturers and the individuals that come into the class to discuss these functional areas and the processes they perform in their organizations.

This paper, Change Requires Change: will relate that bridging the gap between education: of what we teach and training: of what industry looks for in prepared skills for students, needs to be relevant to today’s situations. We need to re-evaluate traditional industry academic partnerships which have been relatively successful including; internships, work-study programs, curriculum advisory boards, guest lectures and capstone courses, to identify gaps and opportunities for what is needed to support our future. Do we want to continue with the status-quo or enhance education? Should we be cognizant of emerging trends? What could be the implications on changing academic-industry partnerships? How can we improve? This paper proposes several new approaches to academics and industry practitioner’s towards greater successful collaborations towards student preparation.

The relationships between Education/Training and Information Technologies at Farmingdale State College are accelerating, with the newest partnership involving the new CloudSuite Industrial Product, CSI, form Infor, USA, Inc. In this arrangement we have a dedicated Intern, Sayem Shahrier, a student at Farmingdale State College who assists with use of the CSI product in the classroom. According to this Intern, the implementation of the Infor CSI tool has been a great real life and hands-on experience. Students in the Education Alliance Program finally received a taste of how an ERP system works. Whether a company is big or small, it should be capable to manage and keep track of all their products and customers in real time. From local companies throughout Long Island all the way up to global mass markets have utilized the Infor CSI tool and have taken customer data to further maximize not only on profits but improve on operational excellence, customer intimacy, and the manufacturing process. Using this innovative tool and this partnership synergy, makes our students best prepared for industry entry and successes. This partnership brings together researchers and practitioners to support the bridging process between Education/Training and Information Technologies.

Interest in autism and related disorders has exploded. Established as an essential book on this complex syndrome, the new edition has been extensively revised to reflect significant advances in research. Featuring contributions from leading international authorities in the clinical and social sciences, the book covers recent progress in our understanding of the field and offers a perspective on the present state of the discipline. Book Reviews 125 All of the above and more are detailed by Claerbaut. He also covers Michigan State’s program as it went into decline in the late 1960s. Daugherty began to miss on the recruiting trail. At the same time, African American students and athletes on campuses across the nation more vocally joined the civil rights protest movement. It was a difficult period for Daugherty, who never sought credit for his progressive attitudes of providing black athletes equal opportunities. One of his responses was to break more barriers with black assistant coaches. Sherman Lewis, Daugherty’s first Underground Railroad All-American as a halfback from Louisville, Kentucky, joined the MSU staff in 1969. Raye was hired part time in 1971 and full time in 1972. Raye and Lewis went on to the National Football League as assistant coaches and offensive coordinators. A consequence of Daugherty doing what was right without seeking credit allowed myths surrounding a 1970 game matching USC and the University of Alabama to usurp his far more significant role. That is reason to link Daugherty with the words of David Maraniss, the Pulitzer Prizewinning biographer, who wrote, “History writes people out of the story. It’s our job to write them back in.” Thus, until that national trip-wire is no longer stepped over and subsequently triggered, the more the merrier to rightly place Daugherty’s story back into history. Journalist Anna Clark provides a gripping, thought-provoking, and comprehensive account of the people who caused, suffered from, and exposed the Flint water crisis. Clark’s brilliant story reminds us of the farreaching , devastating effects of lead exposure and that safe, high-quality drinking water is essential to good health. Clark meticulously details how corruption, recklessness, and arrogance of public officials, prejudice, and greed characterized the crisis in Flint. The Poisoned City is divided into three parts, each subdivided into several chapters. Part one reviews how water that blessed the indigenous Ojibwa people would eventually curse Flint residents. We learn how industrialization coincided with mistreatment and development of waterways. Vast, ferocious Lake Huron served as Flint’s freshwater 126 The Michigan Historical Review source for nearly 50 years. Amid financial distress, Flint switched to the Flint River water system in April 2014. The new water treatment program lacked corrosion control, breaking federal law. Adding to Flint’s woes were exorbitant water and sewer bills, an aging water infrastructure, and decreased federal funding. Clark also describes the federal government’s alarming apartheid approach to city building. Vicious, systematic tactics prolonged residential segregation and created multigenerational housing inequalities. Desegregation triggered a large-scale departure of whites. In 2014, General Motors (GM) workers noticed water-corroded engine parts. People wondered what it did to the inside of humans. Part two discusses the damaging health effects of and countless sources of exposure to lead. We meet longtime GM research director and leaded gasoline creator Charles Kettering. We gain insight into leaded gasoline’s profitability, Flint’s re-engineering to favor automobiles, fierce rebuttals to decries of lead hazards, ethical burdens of proving lead toxicity, the lead industry’s massive lobbying, and victim-blaming in response to residents’ concerns. Clark discusses loopholes in lead restriction policies, manipulation of lead testing, and a trend of childhood lead poisoning in shrinking cities. We learn how biochemist Marc Edwards, veteran journalist Curt Guyette, regulations manager Miguel Del Toral, pediatrician Mona Hanna-Attisha, and local residents rallied to spur a movement to urge governmental action. We also see effects of a very expansive law signed in 2011 that gave emergency managers unyielding power. Part three details the switch back to Detroit water in October 2015 and the flawed, hasty decision-making of untrustworthy leaders. Governor Rick Snyder declares a state of emergency in January 2016 and announces a two-year Legionnaire’s disease outbreak. Declaration of a federal emergency in Flint follows. Objective: To describe faculty efforts to deliver and evaluate health disparities–related education in US online undergraduate and graduate public health courses. Design: A pre- and post-survey was given to a cohort of 46 US college students in three public health courses taught asynchronously online over an 8-week period in 2017. This study took place at a mid-sized, public, rural, midwestern US university. Method: Faculty received professional development and online training and were assigned to develop courses for a new public health programme. Following the receipt of ethical approval, students completed anonymous, online pre- and post-surveys to assess effect of intentional instructional approaches on their knowledge and attitudes about health disparities. Curricula incorporated various assessment methods and teaching strategies. Descriptive statistics were used to compare pre- and post-survey scores and analyse demographic data. Paired t-tests and one-way analysis of variance were used to analyse pre- and post-survey test scores. Results: At post-survey, students demonstrated a positive change in mean scores for several items, including for ability to discuss the role of theory in understanding health behaviour and disparities in health status (3.20 vs 4.06; p < .001) and ability to discuss strategies health promotion programmes can use to reduce health disparities (3.47 vs 4.40; p < .001). Post-survey response rate was 87%. Conclusion: Results suggest an effective way to increase health disparities knowledge among online college students. Additional research is encouraged to expand upon these findings.

Preventable differences in health outcomes between U.S. population subgroups, related to factors such as race or ethnicity, income, and geographic location, are troubling. Geographically, rural American communities experience higher rates of adverse health conditions when compared with urban areas, further widening disparities in health outcomes. Such disparities necessitate the creation of effective curricula to enable students to address the health needs of underserved populations. By intentionally incorporating health disparities awareness content into the curricula, undergraduate and graduate public health programs can play an integral role in developing conscious health practitioners to help close gaps in health outcomes. Moreover, rural health courses may increase students’ interest in rural health careers. This article presents the process and results of faculty efforts to design and deliver health disparities–related education in undergraduate and graduate public health courses at a rural Midwestern U.S. university. Various teaching development programs inspired faculty to use intentional instructional approaches to teach students about health disparities. Consequently, faculty incorporated a variety of assessment methods and teaching styles to infuse health disparities awareness content into public health courses. Results from students’ course evaluations and reflections are discussed along with lessons learned and implications for future pedagogical directions.

We report the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite detection of a multi-planet system orbiting the V = 10.9 K0 dwarf TOI-125. We find evidence for up to five planets, with varying confidence. Three transit signals with high signal-to-noise ratio correspond to sub-Neptune-sized planets (2.76, 2.79, and 2.94 R⊕), and we statistically validate the planetary nature of the two inner planets (Pb = 4.65 days, Pc = 9.15 days). With only two transits observed, we report the outer object (P.03 = 19.98 days) as a planet candidate with high signal-to-noise ratio. We also detect a candidate transiting super-Earth (1.4 R⊕) with an orbital period of only 12.7 hr and a candidate Neptune-sized planet (4.2 R⊕) with a period of 13.28 days, both at low signal-to-noise ratio. This system is amenable to mass determination via radial velocities and transit-timing variations, and provides an opportunity to study planets of similar size while controlling for age and environment. The ratio of orbital periods between TOI-125 b and c (Pc/Pb = 1.97) is slightly lower than an exact 2:1 commensurability and is atypical of multiple planet systems from Kepler, which show a preference for period ratios just wide of first-order period ratios. A dynamical analysis refines the allowed parameter space through stability arguments and suggests that despite the nearly commensurate periods, the system is unlikely to be in resonance.
