This article extends the literature on the financial performance of real estate investment trusts (REITs) by examining whether U.S. REIT returns are impacted by global REITs and other real estate subsectors, such as the U.S. Real Estate Index (USRE) and the U.S. Mortgage Finance Index (USMF). The authors also explore the issue of volatility transmission and the asymmetric effect of volatility spillover on U.S. REIT returns from innovations originating in other real estate subsectors and Global REITs. Results suggest that U.S. REITs are impacted by USRE and USMF returns. There is also evidence of volatility spillover from key real estate constituents-that is, USRE and USFM returns and global REIT markets. These results can be attributed to the changing dynamics of the real estate sector and the gradual integration of the global real estate sector as an asset class. These findings have strong implications for constructing global portfolios including REITs.

We present results from high-resolution, optical to near-IR imaging of host stars of Kepler Objects of Interest (KOIs), identified in the original Kepler field. Part of the data were obtained under the Kepler imaging follow-up observation program over six years (2009-2015). Almost 90% of stars that are hosts to planet candidates or confirmed planets were observed. We combine measurements of companions to KOI host stars from different bands to create a comprehensive catalog of projected separations, position angles, and magnitude differences for all detected companion stars (some of which may not be bound). Our compilation includes 2297 companions around 1903 primary stars. From high-resolution imaging, we find that ∼10% (∼30%) of the observed stars have at least one companion detected within 1″ (4″). The true fraction of systems with close (≲4″) companions is larger than the observed one due to the limited sensitivities of the imaging data. We derive correction factors for planet radii caused by the dilution of the transit depth: assuming that planets orbit the primary stars or the brightest companion stars, the average correction factors are 1.06 and 3.09, respectively. The true effect of transit dilution lies in between these two cases and varies with each system. Applying these factors to planet radii decreases the number of KOI planets with radii smaller than 2 R⊕ by ∼2%-23% and thus affects planet occurrence rates. This effect will also be important for the yield of small planets from future transit missions such as TESS. © 2017. The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved.

Disparities in college access for underrepresented urban students are one of the most urgent educational problems of America’s education system. In response to growing national concern, this longitudinal study investigated how school leaders worked collaboratively with key stakeholders to implement research-supported student services in order to improve college access for underrepresented urban students. The quantitative investigation showed that when educational leaders and key stakeholders worked collaboratively to deliver comprehensive student services, urban students in a high-poverty school district experienced measurable benefits in terms of their college enrolment. This study may be of particular value to policymakers, school leaders, and educators concerned with the low college access rates of students in urban schools, as well as to those who are seeking to understand what works betterto prepare urban students for post-secondary education.

Background: Individuals with neurological impairment have been shown to have deficits in auditory processing abilities. One auditory processing ability shown to be affected is dichotic listening. To date, limited evidence exists demonstrating the effectiveness of dichotic listening intervention on dichotic listening in individuals with neurological impairment. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the dichotic listening training on dichotic listening abilities over multiple training periods in an individual with a long-standing and stable neurological history. Method: This study used a case study design. Over the course of 3 years, an individual with dichotic listening deficits following a left cerebral vascular accident underwent multiple auditory training periods using a dichotic listening training paradigm. Initial assessments indicated a bilateral deficit on the Dichotic Digits test with the right ear performing more poorly than the left ear and a right ear deficit on the Dichotic Rhyme test. Training sessions took place 2–3 times per week for a period of 4–11 weeks in the years 2012, 2013 and 2014. Pre- and post-training assessments of dichotic listening and hearing in noise ability were completed for each training period. Results: Results indicated improvements in the trained (right) ear on the Dichotic Digits test following each of the three training periods. Results also indicated stable performance in the right ear on the Dichotic Rhyme test and variable performance on the Words-in-Noise (WIN) test following each training session. Performance on the Dichotic Digits test decreased slightly between training periods; however, overall performance showed improvement over time. Conclusion: These results suggest improved binaural integration abilities as measured by the Dichotic Digits test following dichotic listening training in an individual with neurological impairment. However, the effects of the training did not transfer to tasks of binaural fusion (Dichotic Rhyme test) or hearing in noise (WIN test) tasks. © 2016 International Association of Physicians in Audiology.

The book is divided into four sections, which explore the science behind gender and affectional orientation; developmental issues across the life span and treatment issues; the specialized needs of nine distinct populations; and the intersectionality of ethnicity and overlapping identities, the role of religion, and counselor advocacy. To further a deeper understanding of the content, each chapter contains an "Awareness of Attitudes and Beliefs Self-Check," a case narrative relating to the material covered, questions for discussion, and a list of online resources. AbstractOriginality/value This paper provides an alternative approach to nurturing queer identity by (1) creating refuge for emerging sexualities; (2) allowing for difficult dialogues where ability, sexuality, and gender can be pragmatically discussed, performed, and negotiated; (3) tolerating the discomfort of these difficult dialogues and pushing through to nurturing the unique queerness that evolves out of these conversations; and finally (4) encouraging transformation of all participants including client and practitioners. The practitioners discuss their own transformation through the co-created dialog with each other and with the client.

The implementation of electrochemical systems such as fuel cells has been hindered by the slow development of low cost high activity catalysts. Here we examine the oxygen reduction reaction performance of a combinatorial Pd-Au-Ag-Ti thin film library using high-throughput screening and correlate the electrochemical behavior to the crystallographic properties. We find compositions of ca. 40-60 at% Pd and 30-35 at% Au exhibit both a low overpotential of close to the value of pure Pt as well as high current density. We also observe a volcano-like relationship between the overpotential and the solid formation strain. This study provides compositional guidance towards the future synthesis of nanostructured quaternary Pd-Au-Ag-Ti alloys and suggests the potential for broader application of high-throughput electrochemical characterization by means of an automatic scanning droplet cell. © The Royal Society of Chemistry.

A series of noble metal high entropy alloys with up to six constituent elements has been produced by casting. PtPdRhIrCuNi forms single-phase face-centered cubic solid solution, and its stability is confirmed by annealing experiments. This alloy deforms homogeneously to ~30% to a high ultimate compression strength of 1839MPa. We discuss rules for the formation of single-phase solid solution.

Temperate phages are common, and prophages are abundant residents of sequenced bacterial genomes. Mycobacteriophages are viruses that infect mycobacterial hosts including Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium smegmatis, encompass substantial genetic diversity and are commonly temperate. Characterization of ten Cluster N temperate mycobacteriophages revealed at least five distinct prophage-expressed viral defence systems that interfere with the infection of lytic and temperate phages that are either closely related (homotypic defence) or unrelated (heterotypic defence) to the prophage. Target specificity is unpredictable, ranging from a single target phage to one-third of those tested. The defence systems include a single-subunit restriction system, a heterotypic exclusion system and a predicted (p)ppGpp synthetase, which blocks lytic phage growth, promotes bacterial survival and enables efficient lysogeny. The predicted (p)ppGpp synthetase coded by the Phrann prophage defends against phage Tweety infection, but Tweety codes for a tetrapeptide repeat protein, gp54, which acts as a highly effective counter-defence system. Prophage-mediated viral defence offers an efficient mechanism for bacterial success in host-virus dynamics, and counter-defence promotes phage co-evolution.

In spite of growing bereavement literature, the meaning of the lived experience of parental bereavement is not well understood. This article presents selected findings from a Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenological study which aimed to describe the lived experience of bereaved parents who experienced the death of a child due to cancer. Conversational interviews were conducted with six parents who experienced the death of a young child due to cancer at least one year prior to participation. The nature of parental bereavement was revealed to be a new state of being into which parents enter immediately after the death of a child and which has no end point. Findings will equip health professionals and others who work with bereaved parents with a deeper understanding of the meaning of parental bereavement.

This paper introduced an analytical solution and improved one-factor Gaussian copula models to the pricing of tranches of a Collateralized debt obligations (CDO) portfolio. Prices of CDO tranches are calculated and compared using the analytical model and different one-factor Gaussian copula models including a two-category heterogeneous model and a completely heterogeneous model that uses individual rate parameter and correlation coefficient for each reference entity in a CDO portfolio. When correlation among reference entities is low, the price calculated from the analytical model matches very well with the one-factor Gaussian copula models. However, as the correlation among reference entities increases, prices calculated using both the analytical solution and the homogeneous or two-category one-factor Gaussian copula models significantly deviate from the completely heterogeneous one-factor Gaussian copula model. This result verifies our belief that uniform parameters cannot completely capture all the heterogeneities in a CDO portfolio. Completely heterogeneous one-factor Gaussian copula model using individual rate parameters and correlation coefficients for each reference entities provides more reliable and accurate prices for structured securities.

When a speaker talks, the visible consequences of what they are saying can be seen. Listeners are influenced by this visible speech both in a noisy listening environment and even when auditory speech can easily be heard. While visible influence on heard speech has been reported to increase from early to late childhood, little is known about the mechanism that underlies this developmental trend. One possible account of developmental differences is that looking behavior to the face of a speaker changes with age. To examine this possibility, the gaze to a speaking face was examined in children from 5 to 10 yrs of age and adults. Participants viewed a speaker's face in a range of conditions that elicit looking: in a visual only (speech reading) condition, in the presence of auditory noise (speech in noise) condition, and in an audiovisual mismatch (McGurk) condition. Results indicate an increase in gaze on the face, and specifically, to the mouth of a speaker between the ages of 5 and 10 for all conditions. This change in looking behavior may help account for previous findings in the literature showing that visual influence on heard speech increases with development.

For over a century the social work profession has had a dual purpose, to promote both human well-being and social justice, but we have not found research that explores how social workers understand and work toward both purposes across multiple practice roles and settings. Authors of this article conducted qualitative research to examine how 18 social workers in various roles and settings understand and implement both purposes in their practice. Instead of a dual purpose, participants described a unifying purpose: a "just sense of well-being" that transcends role and setting. Valuing the dignity and worth of all human beings frames and fuels their work toward a just sense of well-being through three interactive themes: challenging injustice on every level; constructing justice through relationship and resource organizing; and constructing justice through the creation of accepting environments where professionals, clients, and community members can reflect and question, and change mind-sets and actions. Participants provided an array of possibilities for action with clients, professionals, and public leaders within organizations and communities. The implication here is that social workers are charged to reinvigorate purpose and values back into practice with value-based assessment thinking that frames possibilities for action across methods and settings.
