Purpose: Evaluate five different recruitment strategies for their capacity to enroll and retain both healthy and vulnerable older adults as part of a multiyear influenza vaccination study. Methods: We analyzed recruitment methods and other characteristics of individuals who participated in or were considered for five sequential one-year studies. Results: Of 940 screened individuals, 820 met eligibility criteria with 795 enrolled over the five-year study (307 primary participants). Among these enrollees, 63.4% were female and 95.5% were white, with mean ages of 75.3 (older group) and 30.6 (younger group). More than a half (56.7%) of the participants enrolled more than once, participating an average of 2.56 (SD=1.6) times. The majority (81.9%) of individuals recruited each year were return participants identified during earlier recruitments. Physician referrals resulted in only 5.3% recruitments. Conclusions: Recruitment and retention of study subjects, especially older adults, was facilitated by the existence of a database listing past participants.

We investigate the optimal path that you should take from the middle of the road to the curb in order to avoid being hit by an oncoming truck. Although your instincts may tell you to run directly toward the curb, it turns out that this path, although the shortest, is not generally the safest.

This phenomenological study explored 6 new counselors' experiences working in community mental health centers and their experiences of the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs-accredited training received in preparation for such work. Three themes from the interviews were identified to provide implications for counselor preparation: contextual descriptions, essential graduate training components, and supportive factors. © 2014 by the American Counseling Association. This article presents changes, along with historical perspectives, in the World Gymnastics Championships during the last 110 years - 1903 to 2013. Changes include: the events contested, team and individual achievements and dominance, debut of skills, difficulty expansion, judges, scoring, competition format, Finals qualification system, expansion of FIG affiliation, frequency cycle of the WC, number of teams and gymnasts per competition, age requirement of gymnasts, team size, venues, apparatus, devices for learning, education and certification courses, disseminating information, and expanded media coverage.

Using the known detection limits for high-resolution imaging observations and the statistical properties of true binary and line-of-sight companions, we estimate the binary fraction of Kepler exoplanet host stars. Our speckle imaging programs at the WIYN 3.5 m and Gemini North 8.1 m telescopes have observed over 600 Kepler objects of interest and detected 49 stellar companions within 1 arcsec. Assuming binary stars follow a log-normal period distribution for an effective temperature range of 3000-10,000 K, then the model predicts that the vast majority of detected sub-arcsecond companions are long period (P > 50 yr), gravitationally bound companions. In comparing the model predictions to the number of real detections in both observational programs, we conclude that the overall binary fraction of host stars is similar to the 40%-50% rate observed for field stars. © 2014. Spectroscopy is often one of the most difficult subjects in an organic chemistry course for students to master. One difficulty comes from relating peaks in a spectrum with structural features. For example, when teaching infrared spectroscopy, it is often difficult to connect the theory between bending and stretching vibrations to the actual peaks. iSpartan for the iOS platform allows this to be done easily without the high cost of the full Spartan software. © 2014 The American Chemical Society and Division of Chemical Education, Inc.
