Management of patients with aphasia often focuses on training nonverbal augmentative communication strategies; however, these strategies frequently do not generalize to natural situations. The limited success may be because training was not sufficient to produce an integrated multimodal semantic representation. The purpose of this study was to examine whether simultaneous training of stimuli in both verbal and nonverbal modalities would solidify the links within the semantic network and improve switching among modalities as needed in conversation. Two individuals with severe aphasia participated in 6 to 8 hours of Multimodal Communication Training (MCT), during which they conveyed a concept by verbalizing, gesturing, writing, and drawing. After practice with all modalities for a single concept, a new concept was introduced. Results showed that one participant increased conveyance of concepts on the functional communication task using a variety of modalities. Although some improvement was seen with the second participant, his overall performance remained poor, likely because of a greater impairment in semantic knowledge. After a brief period of semantic training, the second participant demonstrated additional gains. Thus, MCT may serve to increase switching among verbal and nonverbal modalities in individuals with intact semantic representations, thereby increasing the likelihood that individuals will use an alternative method to communicate. The Mencius contains several negative remarks about the Mohists and their doctrine of 'universal love' (jian'ai). However, little attention has been paid to whether Mencius' descriptions of Mohism were accurate. Fortunately, there is a surviving record of the beliefs of Mozi in the text that bears his name. In this essay, I analyze this text and descriptions of Mohism from other early Chinese texts, and compare them to the criticisms of Mohism in the Mencius. Ultimately, I show that the image of the Mohists as ones who promoted a doctrine that contradicted filial piety was inaccurate, and obscured the complexities of filial piety in the Warring States period. © 2011 Taylor and Francis.

A Quantitative Trait Locus (QTL) analysis was performed using two novel Recombinant Inbred Line (RIL) populations, derived from the progeny between two Arabidopsis thaliana genotypes collected at the same site in Kyoto (Japan) crossed with the reference laboratory strain Landsberg erecta (Ler). We used these two RIL populations to determine the genetic basis of seed dormancy and flowering time, which are assumed to be the main traits controlling life history variation in Arabidopsis. The analysis revealed quantitative variation for seed dormancy that is associated with allelic variation at the seed dormancy QTL DOG1 (for Delay Of Germination 1) in one population and at DOG6 in both. These DOG QTL have been previously identified using mapping populations derived from accessions collected at different sites around the world. Genetic variation within a population may enhance its ability to respond accurately to variation within and between seasons. In contrast, variation for flowering time, which also segregated within each mapping population, is mainly governed by the same QTL. © 2011 Silady et al.

It is an assumed view in Chinese philosophy that the grammatical differences between English or Indo-European languages and classical Chinese explain some of the differences between the Western and Chinese philosophical discourses. Although some philosophers have expressed doubts about the general link between classical Chinese philosophy and syntactic form of classical Chinese, I discuss a specific hypothesis, i. e., the mass-noun hypothesis, in this essay. The mass-noun hypothesis assumes that a linguistic distinction such as between the singular terms and the predicates is sufficient to justify or necessarily leads to a specific ontological distinction such as the distinction between the particular and the universal. I argue that one cannot read off semantic properties simply from syntactic ones and hence the syntactic differences do not automatically translate into the semantic differences between languages, that the syntactic features of Chinese nouns do not have explanatory significance in explaining why the particular-universal problem does not arise in the classical period of Chinese philosophy, and that the part-whole ontology allegedly informed by the mass-noun-like semantics does not provide a natural or intuitive picture of the language-world relation. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V.2011.

This chapter highlights that forgiveness is a decision that clients should be helped to make and that advocacy has little place in the counseling session. It specifically confirms the value of forgiveness in the counseling setting and offers some guidelines for its effective application. There are at least three approaches to justice, altering in the extent to which they are proactive or reactive, past or future oriented, limited or general: (1) retributive justice, (2) restorative justice, and (3) pervasive justice. The pragmatic model needs an in-depth investigation of alternatives; their practical and moral costs and their benefits. It is concluded that there can be no relief unless the offender confesses and asks forgiveness, and argues that repentance is poor therapy and of questionable morality, because it leaves clients in a state of helpless dependence on the person or persons who offended them in the first place. © 2002 by Oxford University Press, Inc. Noncontact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) is being increasingly used to measure the interaction force between an atomically sharp probe tip and surfaces of interest, as a function of the three spatial dimensions, with picometer and piconewton accuracy. Since the results of such measurements may be affected by piezo nonlinearities, thermal and electronic drift, tip asymmetries, and elastic deformation of the tip apex, these effects need to be considered during image interpretation. In this paper, we analyze their impact on the acquired data, compare different methods to record atomic-resolution surface force fields, and determine the approaches that suffer the least from the associated artifacts. The related discussion underscores the idea that since force fields recorded by using NC-AFM always reflect the properties of both the sample and the probe tip, efforts to reduce unwanted effects of the tip on recorded data are indispensable for the extraction of detailed information about the atomicscale properties of the surface. © 2012 Baykara et al.

When solving an algorithmic problem involving a polyhedron in R 3, it is common to start by partitioning the given polyhedron into simplier ones. The most common process is called triangulation and it refers to partitioning a polyhedron into tetrahedra in a face-to-face manner. In this paper instead of triangulations we will consider tilings by tetrahedra. In a tiling the tetrahedra are not required to be attached to each other along common faces. We will construct several polyhedra which can not be triangulated but can be tiled by tetrahedra. We will also revisit a nontriangulatable polyhedron of Rambau and a give a new proof for his theorem. Finally we will identify new families of non-tilable, and thus non-triangulable polyhedra.

A comparative study investigating the integration of supplemental teaching resources in materials science education was developed for the purpose of determining the effectiveness of teaching strategies. Digital stories created by students, excerpts from the Nova Making Stuff documentaries, YouTube educational videos and student generated demo-kits were used as part of the investigation whereby two 9th grade science classes (n∼26) were evaluated. Each participant in the study received one period (40-min) of a traditional lesson on Materials Science including specific content, vocabulary, and a pre- and post- lesson assessment. Additionally, the students in each class participated in a 30-min supplemental component, e.g. video or activity-based demonstration using aforementioned kits or video compilation. Pre- and post- evaluations (e.g. open-ended and likert questions) were administered to all of the participants. As hypothesized, the students' feedback and performance on assessment activities reveal that the use of multimedia and activity-based resources may be equally effective teaching methods as traditional methods. © 2012 Materials Research Society.

Recent studies have documented that it is only very recently that the Emerging Market Hedge Funds (EMHFs) have started mimicking the performance pattern of regular Hedge Funds. These findings therefore motivate us to analyze the market timing and security selection skills of EMHF managers. Rolling regression technique is employed to analyze the above mentioned issues on a time-varying dimension. The rolling market timing regression results suggest that the EMHF managers do not exhibit consistently superior security selection or market timing skills even in an up-market scenario. The static market timing models however, indicate significant outperformance due to superior security selection and significant underperformance due to perverse market timing for the EMHFs in general. Multifactor asset class regressions, using fund-level data, reaffirm the notion that the EMHFs mimic the performance pattern reported for mutual funds in the mutual fund literature. © 2012, Banking and Finance Review.

Those familiar with the goals of SENCER and those who attend the regional meetings and Summer Institutes understand the transformative impact this approach has on teaching science. And while these individuals eagerly embrace SENCER and revise courses to incorporate the SENCER approach, many face the arduous task of convincing their colleagues and administrators that SENCER is a worthwhile investment. Leading change in institutions steeped in tradition can be difficult, yet some institutions do have success in implementing SENCER throughout the STEM disciplines. This chapter discusses strategies which have proven successful in implementing SENCER at a public, comprehensive university and weaves together leadership and marketing theories which can lead to a tapestry of program and institutional change. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

Few studies have examined the parenting of fathers with cooccurring substance abuse (SA) and intimate partner violence (IPV) problems. None have specifically interviewed men with these cooccurring issues using qualitative methods about their reflective functioning in relation to their children. This paper aims to provide evidence of the reflective capacity of fathers with cooccurring SA and IPV. To assess this, men were asked to describe examples of negative emotions they experienced as parents and how they perceived their children responded to those emotions. In total, 40 fathers with cooccurring SA and IPV were interviewed using the Revised Parent Development Interview. Interviews were coded for reflective functioning and for themes that emerged related to angry and guilty feelings these fathers experienced as parents. Overall, fathers in the sample had a very limited capacity to think about the thoughts and feelings of their children. The desire to spend more time with their child and an inability to provide financially were two common themes. Anger toward the child's mother for not providing adequate care and a focus on shielding the child from his anger were also reported frequently. Fathers did not report feelings of guilt related to their substance use or aggression in their relationships. This paper is one of the first to explore reflective functioning of fathers with cooccurring IPV and SA. These findings are discussed in relation to their implications for intervention with fathers with cooccurring SA and IPV issues. © 2012, Emerald Group Publishing Limited
